Emergency First Responder (EFR) course

The Emergency First Responder Training Program has been developed by the Indian Emergency Medical Association as per international standards. IEMA is one of India's leading Emergency First Responder (Emergency First Aid, CPR & AED) training and skill development providers.

The Emergency First Responder (EFR) training program is the first and most important link to (rural, urban & Tribal) a good emergency response system for any community. The program aims to develop emergency first responders who are trained in simple, life-saving medical techniques that can be performed with minimal equipment.

This program is an ideal course to teach you the skills to respond immediately to life-threatening situations and injuries, to help the victim, and to assist the victim when emergency services (ambulance) are unavailable or delayed.

This course trains participants in how to activate the emergency response system, Scene Safety & Patient Safety protocols, personal protection (wearing a mask, gloves and goggles), and Train in essential basic care skills such as breathing, giving chest compressions (CPR), AED and administering first aid for medical, trauma and environmental emergencies.

Who is a Emergency First Responders -EFR ?

An Emergency First Responder is the first person on the scene to recognize an emergency, activate the EMS system, and provide life-saving emergency first aid with minimal equipment until EMS providers arrive.

  • Provides immediate life-saving care to patients.
  • EFRs have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide basic life-saving interventions while awaiting the arrival of additional higher-level EMS resources.
  • EFRs also provide assistance to higher-level personnel (EMTs -ER & Ambulance) during emergencies, evacuations, and transports.
  • Emergency First Responders are a critical part of a comprehensive EMS response. With medical training, Emergency First Responders perform basic care interventions with minimal equipment.

Especially members should be passionate about saving lives and interested in participating in emergency first response training courses.

Who can ATTEND this Program? 

In India, the Factories Act 1948 (Section 45(3)) mandates that workplaces must have trained first aiders, with at least one certified person required for every 150 workers. Mandatory training applies to industrial workers, Drivers (Public Transport-Bus, Ambulance, Lorry, Van, Car, Auto...), teachers, Nursing home (Hospital) staff, public facilities such as schools, shopping malls, multiplex staff, gyms and security personnel to provide immediate care, CPR and injury management before professional help arrives.

Specific roles:             People in high-risk occupations, including security guards, factory workers, drivers, and teachers, should have basic life-saving skills.

General public:          While not mandatory, it is recommended that all citizens learn emergency first aid, supported by Good Samaritan laws that protect bystanders who assist accident                                       victims.

Key Orders and Sections:

  • Factories & Industries: Mandatory under Section 45(3) of the Factories Act, 1948.
  • Sea Time: Mandatory for personnel under the Directorate General of Shipping.
  • Public Safety: Mandatory for personnel in swimming pools, gyms and fitness centers.
  • Drivers/Conductors: Often required in the transportation sector.

Minimum Entry Qualification:

Emergency First Responder Certification Program:  Entry Level Program

Educational Qualification - The curriculum can be taught to laypeople with a 10th grade and above education qualification.

                                             This course is open to anyone interested in becoming an Emergency First Responder

                                             Learners must be 13 years or older to complete this course

Minimum Course duration: 10 Days to 1 Month / 54 hours Program

This is a three-month certification (54 Hours) program designed by IEMA. To qualify as an entry level professional in the field of Emergency First Responder, it is recommended that training programme would be of

In 1 Months:  50 hours Theory

Method:

  • Video-virtual sessions (Online)
  • Didactic or instructive lectures
  • Recorded Video Lectures

Practical / Skills Training:  4 Hours

Hands-on training:

  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Adult children and infants choking
  • Manikins (Simulation-Based Training)
  • Realistic scenario-based training

Course Participants:

A maximum of 50-60 candidates/ participants may be accommodated per course

Note: If the training is conducted at another premises/organization, the host organization shall bear the travel, boarding and accommodation expenses of the resource persons.

Medium of Instruction:

  • English/Regional Language will be the medium of instruction for all the subjects and course examination.
  • The modules will be in English, Telugu, Hindi and Regional Language.
  • In the Indian scenario, a mix of languages ​​is also good.
  • This program is designed for Good Samaritans/Bystanders, so that everyone can understand clearly.
  • Our instructor is well versed in the regional language and at least proficient in English.

Attendance:

  • It is mandatory for each candidate to attend a total of 3 days of training. (Validity is up to 6 months, within which the program should be completed).

Note: No relaxation in this rule will be allowed due to any reason like illness etc.

Scope of Practice

First responders provide service in environments that require specific skills and knowledge. They also act as liaisons with other emergency services. This course provides an introduction to these concepts. The curriculum includes the skills required for an individual to provide first aid with a limited amount of equipment. Specifically, upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to do the following –

  • Determine the severity of a patient’s condition or extent of injury to assess the need for first aid.
  • Provide appropriate first aid for life-threatening injuries related to airway, breathing, and circulation, and disability.
  • Understand some life-saving emergencies and initiate first responder care
  • Successfully transfer the victim to the medical care system.
  • Assist health care providers
